Dead Man Walking: Living By Day, Dead By Night

Chapter 89: Murderer

Elena and Olivia slept while Zane was out of battle, the awakened he came across, or more accurately stated silently reaping their souls from the shadows. But they were awakened by a loud noise in the distance.

The noise was one that any American was familiar with if they had travelled along the Nation's roads long enough. It was the deafening sound of motorcycles and the howls of the men on top of them. There were, of course, other engines mixed in with this sound, but the motorcycles drowned them out.

The moment Elena and Olivia heard this, they were quick to grab their weapons and attach their battle gear as they began searching for Zane in a panicked state.

"Zane? Where's Zane? Elena, have you seen Zane?"

Elena searched the cell Zane had taken as his quarters for the night, but found that neither he nor his gear were there. Immediately cursing beneath her breath as she did so.

"He's not there… The bastard seriously left us here to go scavenger for supplies without giving us a heads up!"

Olivia sighed heavily as she peeked out the blinds of the building. She knew if things went south, she and Elena would be on their own. And was hoping that the roaming gang would pass them by without noticing that the building was currently occupied.

Unfortunatel,y in the next moment, these hopes were dashed as the lead motorcycle spotted that the gate of the Police Stations was chained. He immediately motioned for the convoy to stop as he pointed towards the building and alerted the group of his findings.

"Hey stop, you fucking retards! Can't you see that there are people in there?"

Immediately, the convoy came to a stop as armed men stepped off their motorcycles, and even more armed men stepped out of their trucks. Trucks whose beds were full of survivors that were bound, either by zipties, hand cuffs, makeshift metal chains, or just plain old-fashioned rope.

It was obvious that these people were enslaved by the gang of bandits. Something that was becoming increasingly common across the wasteland. But what they planned to do with these slaves, neither Olivia nor Elena knew.

But that was not their immediate concern. Instead, one of the marauders stepped forward with a bullhorn. He was dressed in what was clearly mismatched gear, either looted or scavenged. His voice was erratic, almost as if he were on something as he called out to the survivors within the police station.

"We know you're in there! Now how about you step out with your hands up and make this all easy like?"

Yet the only response they received was a gunshot fired by Elena, who shot it straight into the man with the bullhorn's head. This, of course, escalated the situation as the Marauders immediately returned fire with their superior weapons.

A .50 caliber heavy machine gun shredded the Police station, puncturing through its fortified defenses, causing both Elena and Oliva to duck behind cover, hoping that the combination of that cover and the walls would protect them.

Without suppressive fire, the marauders were able to act with impunity as one of them stepped out from the truck with a rocket launcher in hand. He aimed the weapon towards the front entrance of the police station and waited for his comrades to tear down the front gates with their trucks. Which they did by attaching chains to it.

Once the path was clear, the bandit with the rocket launcher fired a shot directly at the entrance of the building, blasting it to rubble, as the commander of the group shouted out at his fellow raiders.

"Move! Move! Move! Clear the breach now, you fucking cowards! Or there won't be any loot for you!"

Prompted forward by the idea of not getting their share of the bounty, the entire group of bandits flood through the gap, where they found Olivia and Elena lying behind cover. The leader of which pointed his rifle at the two women and broke out into laughter.

"Holy fucking shit! God damn! Good job Jamal! If you did not see those damn gates, we would have never gotten our hands on such precious slaves! Even if these two bitches are total sluts, with their looks they will still fetch a mighty price in the Safe Zone!"

The Marauder who had spotted the chained gate smirked as he asked his boss for a special reward.

"Hey boss, you mind giving me the first crack at the red-haired one? I can't wait to break her in!"

Elena, of course, was trembling with rage. Not only had these men automatically assumed she was a slut, which absolutely infuriated her. But what was worse was the idea that this bastard thought he could "break her in" as if she wouldn't kill him if he dared to even touch her.

Because of this, she immediately cast her skill, freezing time on the spot. And the moment she did so, Olivia unleashed a vast torrent of electricity in the direction where all the bandits still stood. Frying them to a crisp. The moment time reset itself, their fresh corpses fell to the ground scorched, completely black.

Yet Elena's hands were still trembling as she gritted her teeth and hissed her thoughts through them.

"I'm a virgin, you fucking bastards!"

Olivia couldn't help but understand Elena's fury, and nodded her head in silence, not giving a damn that the two of them had just killed about two dozen living beings. But what was curious though was the fact that Elena unlocked a new achievement, one that Zane had unlocked much earlier on.

Of course, she was too enraged to look at her system at the moment. But by being the first to open fire on the bandits, who were offering her a "peace solution" via enslavement. The system registered her first kill as an act of aggression, and thus she had succeeded in unlocking the hidden achievement: "Murderer."

Which she would later find out after she and Olivia had calmed down and dealt with the slaves who were currently chained in the back of the trucks.
