Dragon's Wrath: The Cursed Returnee

Chapter 48 Morale

Although the same thing wasn't happening to the small fries, the necromancer was making sure to keep some monsters in tip-top shape. Despite the fact that the power of skeletons wasn't half bad, a skeleton cyclops wouldn't be as strong as a real cyclops. So, it was only natural that the necromancer would focus on his powerhouses.

"I suppose it can't be helped…" Ethan shrugged. "I can't waste too much time on a single enemy."

A wide attack was too annoying, given that Ethan had to expose himself for a few precious moments, so he allocated eighteen points into Bash. The cyclops had lost its weapon, but it had its fists, and those were big enough to crush Ethan. However, when the right hand moved to attack him, Ethan swung his sword a single time and cut off the monster's hand.

"That is better," Ethan said.

The soldiers around him opened their eyes in shock when they saw that, but Ethan ignored them. Instead of attacking, Ethan waited for the moment the beast used its left hand, and he repeated the same thing. Now that the monster was completely defenseless, Ethan jumped and beheaded the creature.

As if one of their own had slayed the monster, the soldiers cheered and roared when they saw the unknown boy defeating a monster that could defeat dozens of soldiers alone. The cheering passed across the whole battlefield, and that raised the morale of the army. Ethan had forgotten how much morale was important since, most of the time, he fought alone, still, despite everything, even that made him feel a bit more eager to fight.

"I guess I'm not that coolheaded," Ethan shrugged. "It is only obvious… I'm a warrior, after all."

Although there were other monsters as troublesome as the cyclops, Ethan focused only on hunting them. Their numbers were pretty high, and Ethan felt more comfortable while fighting creatures that were also warrior types. In the end, Ethan had to fight the entire night to crush into bits every single cyclops until they couldn't be brought back to life anymore. Still, he didn't mind it since he had planned to fight the whole night.

Hannah had planned to bring him back to the walls several times in order to let her little brother rest, but that hadn't been necessary. Even though at the start of the night, he barely had the strength to face a small squad of the weakest monsters, when the sun rose, Ethan could defeat the largest squads formed with only the most powerful monsters.

"What a cheeky little brother I have," Hannah smiled while watching the sunrise and seeing the battlefield in front of the walls. "He has even more potential than me… I can't slack off anymore."

It was quite the sight. Even Lili, who traveled with Ethan for a few days, couldn't believe what she was seeing. In front of the capital, there were mountains of pulverized monsters. The plains were so vast, and yet most of it had been painted with the red of the blood of the fallen soldiers or with the dark brown of the corpses of the zombies. At least half of the undead army that tormented the imperial capital in the last weeks was still alive. Still, the necromancer suffered a lot of damage, that was for sure.

Meanwhile, the number of fallen soldiers didn't reach even the one-thousand mark. The losses weren't small, but it didn't change the fact that, for the first time, the defending army won the battle against the necromancer. It was hard to believe that only two people managed to change the tide of the battle so much. Thanks to it, Lili couldn't help but stare at Hannah in amazement. Although she didn't attack the monsters, she used her powers to teleport all those who were heavily wounded to the infirmaries across the imperial capital.

"You two… are heroes, right?" Lili asked. "Heroes from another world."

"We are from another world, but not heroes anymore," Hannah replied while looking for Ethan on the battlefield. We fulfilled our duty… or the things were forced to do, but right now, we are not fighting for others anymore. We are fighting for ourselves and for those we care about. A true hero isn't someone like that, right?"

A hero for Lili was someone who helped others. It didn't matter what their intentions were, so she wasn't quite sure if Hannah was one hundred percent right. Still, Lili was also aware that her opinion was just too simple. In any case, she couldn't help but admire in the same way the two siblings the same way she admired the girl who saved that world six years ago.

"Your name is Lili, right?" Hannah asked. "Thank you for helping my little brother."

After saying that, Hannah disappeared. She used Teleport on herself. Still, it wasn't like Lili had anything to say to her, but then she recalled the bet she had made with Ethan. At that point in time, it was obvious that those two could defeat the necromancer, but Lili hoped that she could meet them before they left the planet.

Hannah found Ethan sitting on the ground and in front of a mountain of burned bones. In that state, the bones had become fossils, and there was no sign of mana in them. As such, the necromancer couldn't transform them into monsters.

"Are you ready?" Hannah asked. "It looks like your plan worked, and the necromancer is makings his troops retreat since, with you and me here, he won't accomplish anything. Still, we can track him."

"I'm ready, but I'm not so sure about you," Ethan said. "You spent the whole night trying to save as many as you could. You are even more pale than before."

"It is fine. This time you stole the spotlight, so I will let you continue," Hannah shrugged. "I will just make sure that you will return in one piece."

Hannah was more relaxed than Ethan expected, but that was only reasonable given that that night, she prevented many deaths. At the same time, her little brother led the soldiers to victory. It was only natural that someone would feel proud of their young sibling's success.

"Sweet… and here I was hoping that I would be able to see you using some flashy spells," Ethan frowned. "Well, we have all the time in the world for that. Let's just finish our business here."
