Chapter 542: Why not be a little more selfish?
Chapter 541
The late-night suburban villa is peaceful and elegant, like a pure maiden.
On the second floor, within the master bedroom, a warm and soft glow filled the room. On the soft bed, Wen Ran wore a serene sleeping face, her lips curved into a subtle arc.
Next to her, Mo Xiuchen’s eyes tenderly gazed at her fair and pure face.
The more he looked, the more his heart ached.
After a while, he slowly rose.
Mo Xiuchen got out of bed, took out a small, delicately-shaped bottle from the drawer, and poured two pills into his hand. He walked to the sofa, picked up the glass of water on the coffee table, and swallowed the pills.
His gaze shifted towards the sleeping woman on the bed, and he turned around to enter the study.
He lit a cigarette, took a heavy puff, and exhaled a plume of smoke. His handsome face was obscured behind the curling smoke, the cigarette clamped between his slender fingers.
The image of Ranran’s rejection just now flashed before his eyes, making the look in his eyes seem even darker in an instant.
Tonight, after returning from the banquet, he had watched television with Wen Ran awhile before turning on the bathwater for her.
After their respective baths, he had helped Wen Ran dry her hair, and on an impulse, had kissed her.
Later, he had apologized to her, saying, “Ranran, I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself just now.”
A hint of paleness flushed across Wen Ran’s blushing face.
The more he did this, the more it hurt her.
Looking up at his remorseful eyes, her heart felt as if it had been pierced by a sharp blade, shedding drops of blood.

After a good while, her hesitant voice trembled as she said, “Mo Xiuchen… I…”
She didn’t know how to explain. This wasn’t something that could be explained.
Mo Xiuchen was too smart. She was afraid that he would understand the moment she began to explain.
Little did he know that he’d already gotten the answer from Gu Kai that afternoon.
Mo Xiuchen pulled her into his chest, resting his chin on the crown of her head. In a gentle voice, he said, “Ranran, you don’t have to say anything. I know, and I promise that I won’t force you again. I’ll give you time and wait patiently for the day you’re ready.”
…
Mo Xiuchen took a deep breath, his sexy thin lips pursed tight.
He brought the cigarette back to his mouth and took a deep puff, blowing out a string of smoke rings. The thought of Wen Ran’s health grew more resolute.
Since receiving confirmation from Gu Kai that afternoon, that thought had never faded. No matter what it took, he was determined to see Ranran recover.
Even if it meant trading his own health in exchange.
All he wanted was for her to live.
To live healthily and peacefully.
No matter what the cost, he was willing.
Even if she was unwilling, he had to do this.
Looking towards the door, he quietly said to himself, “Ranran, if one day I can’t be with you, please stop loving me.”
He repressed the spread of emotions within him.
Mo Xiuchen put out the remaining cigarette, took out his cellphone, and dialed a number.
The hazy smoke in the air gradually dimmed.
The call was answered, and a deep voice came through the phone, “Hello, General Mo!”
“Did Ah Mu tell you that Wu Tianyi is being escorted back to G City?”
Mo Xiuchen’s voice was deep but a mite hoarse.
“Yes!”
The person on the other side responded calmly.
Mo Xiuchen’s eyes flashed, his voice turning colder, “Don’t let what happened to Zhou Mingfu happen to Wu Tianyi.”
There was a momentary silence on the other side of the phone. After a few seconds, Lu Zhiyan’s voice rang out, “Understood, I won’t let that happen.”
Last time, Zhou Mingfu died suddenly the night before his court hearing. They hadn’t been able to determine who was behind it.
This time, having already applied to Guardianship, he was personally escorting Wu Tianyi.
After returning to G City, he planned to guard personally.
He was determined to get the information on Fu Jingyi’s whereabouts out of him, and wouldn’t allow a repeat of the previous incident.
“Wu Tianyi is the person most directly linked to Fu Jingyi. He knows a lot, and Fu Jingyi won’t let you easily escort him back to G City. He’s bound to do something.”
Mo Xiuchen walked up to the window in the study, his tall figure towering behind the pull of curtains. His gaze was cold as he looked out at the night skyline. The more Wu Tianyi knew, the harder his safety would be to guarantee.
He wanted to learn about Fu Jingyi’s hideout from him, locate Fu Jingyi, then help Ranran regain her health.
“I’ve arranged everything. This time, even if I have to use force, I have to pry open Fu Jingyi’s mouth.”
Lu Zhiyan’s voice, carrying a hint of the night’s chill, came through, the determination even more prominent.
After hanging up with him, Mo Xiuchen’s phone rang again. Looking at the caller ID, his eyes narrowed slightly and his long fingers pressed the answer button: “Hello, Ah Kai.”
“I knew you’d still be awake.”
On the other end of the line, Gu Kai’s voice carried a note of certainty. Mo Xiuchen corners of the mouth twitched, but he didn’t smile as he asked indifferently, “What’s up?”
“When did you say Wu Tianyi would be brought back?”
Gu Kai yawned on the other end of the phone, asked with a hint of fatigue.
“Tomorrow. Lu Zhiyan is personally escorting him back. I’ve just called him to give him some instructions.”
Mo Xiuchen sat down in the chair, his body leaning back against it. One hand rose up to rub at his forehead. Gu Kai’s voice, slightly excited, rang through the phone.
“That’s great. I told you before, I’ve finished developing what I mentioned. The trial use went well. When Wu Tianyi arrives tomorrow, we can use it on him. We’re bound to find out Fu Jingyi’s whereabouts.”
“So soon?”
Mo Xiuchen knew what he was talking about. It was something Gu Kai began researching after Xiao Wenqing was caught, a substance that could cause Wenqing to divulge the truth.
It was more effective than any lie detector.
“Just finished the trials.” Gu Kai’s voice carried a hint of pride and confidence, then he yawned again, tiredly saying, “I’m really exhausted. I’m going to sleep now. After Lu Zhiyan arrives tomorrow, let’s go together.”
Before waiting for Mo Xiuchen’s response, Gu Kai hung up.
Mo Xiuchen sat alone in the study for a long while before getting up and leaving. He closed the door to his study, went to stand beside the bed, and stared at Wen Ran, who was sleeping soundly on the bed, with tender eyes.
He climbed onto the bed and gently pulled her into his arms. Although she was in deep sleep, she naturally nuzzled closer to him. After finding a comfortable position, she buried her face into his chest and wrapped her arms around his waist, continuing to sleep peacefully.
Mo Xiuchen felt a warmth settle in his heart.
His slender fingers lightly brushed her porcelain-white cheek.
His gaze tenderly focused on her, and no matter how long he looked, it was never enough.
Instead, the more he looked, the more heartbroken he felt.
“Ranran, why can’t you be a little selfish?”
Mo Xiuchen murmured, his hoarse voice full of tenderness. If only she could be a bit more selfish, love him a bit less, she wouldn’t have to push him away so resolutely.
Knowing that he could cure her ‘poison’, why did she refuse to be with him…
Gazing at her, his eyes gradually deepened. He slowly leaned over and pressed his lips gently on her forehead.
“Ranran, what am I going to do with you?”
