Chapter 378 – Suck at Singing

Inside the recording room filled with audio equipment and many floating hologram screens, Max sat on the site while watching Zaza-P bobbing his head at the melody Lily sent as a sample. The girl stood proudly on the producer's side as if she had no worries that Zaza would call it bad.

After a while, the green-haired man took off his headphones and raised a thumb up.

"This is good. Different from your usual style, but I can feel the sincerity in it. The lyrics you send also fit the melody. Is it a duet with Max boy? You're pretty bold, lil Lily~" Zaza-P giggled as he played with a device in front of him. "How about doing it like this?

Max boy's voice is a bit deeper than you, so…"

The music played. Soft sound weaved to become a melody. There was no vocal, just music. Max was familiar with it but somehow it was different. It sounded more…

'Complete. Yeah, that might be it.'

As if the missing piece had been filled up, the music turned out way better than the sample. However…

"No, it's not good. The pitch is over the place." Lily complained with a straight face. She pushed Zaza-P away and began to mess with the device before clicking a button to start the music again.

There was not much difference. At least that was what Max, a beginner, could take. But somehow, Zaza-P looked pretty focused and serious, nodding a few times throughout the song.

"Hmm, you're right. It's better like this. But it lacks a kick! A kick, lil Lily!"

"Un. I thought so too. I want to ask you about it, Zaza. Do you have any idea?"

"Idea, huh? How about turning it like this~ We add it here and there… Boom! Like this."

Their conversation became more practical and difficult for Max to understand. He even tried to find some of the words they spoke in the browser, but they were just too fast and passionate.

And then…

"Max, can you try singing these parts?"

Lily called out to him. It was perfect timing. He was about to get bored to death and run away from this room.

"Sure." He rose from his seat and approached them. "Which part should I try? I can't promise it will be good, though."

"Surely, you jest." Zaza-P giggled playfully. "Lil Lily will be disappointed if it's not good, you know?"

"I won't. I will just teach him." Lily said, turning to Max. She smiled softly and pointed at some parts of the lyrics. "It's this part, Max. You should sing it like this."

Lily raised her chin slightly and began to sing. Max listened quietly and was amazed by her vocal range.

Not only that, she also changed the lyrics. From the simple one, she sang in the past into proper lyrics that could be sung to anyone.

He understood. She made this melody for him to sing.

He felt like he could do it.

"How is it?" Lily asked as she finished singing.

Max applauded.

"That was amazing." He genuinely thought so, which made Lily blush red. "Can I try it?"

"U-Un. That was embarrassing. I've never been praised directly like that… Ugh…"

"Fufufu, how cute and precious," Zaza-P commented from the side.

Ignoring that, Max inhaled and tried to sing his part. His voice was cracked, he wasn't used to it yet. Stopping, he cleared his throat and tried once again.

This time, his voice flowed smoothly. He was getting used to low and slow chords. When he finished, he looked at Lily and Zaza-P to see their reactions.

"H-How is it?" Somehow, he was getting nervous just waiting for their answer.

Lily looked troubled, not knowing what to say. On the other hand…

"That was terrible. If lil Lily gets 9/10, you only get 1.5/10. Extra 0.5 points for effort."

Zaza-P was more direct as he was the producer and one who would control the production's quality.

"Ugh…"

While Max knew he was bad compared to Lily, he didn't think it was that bad. And the producer was too blunt!

"My tiny heart is shattered."

"Umm, Max. Don't mind! I will teach you."

"Thanks, Lily. That makes me feel better."

"Now, now. If you want to teach Max boy, do it quickly. We only have today to record this song, no? I remember you wanted someone to hear it." Zaza-P urged them.

Someone to hear the song. Lily had planned it since she sang the first time. She wanted her parents to hear and know what she did.

They were pretty indifferent toward her. Not loving, not hating. She just existed and they had to take care of her to maintain their image.

Max couldn't say he understood her feelings, but he would support her in anything. The neglecting parents were not the worst. They were just… not that interested in having kids in the first place. It should've ended with Peter, but something that happened in the past made them have Lily.

'But it's not like Lily hates them or anything. She just wants to prove that she exists and is talented enough to be recognized by the world. Even that isn't her priority. She's happy the way she is now, surrounded by caring people and making new friends.'

If it had to be explained in words…

'Maybe it's just a late rebellious phase.' Max chuckled.

Pak!

However, he was in the middle of practice. He had gotten a slap on his hand because his concentration broke.

"Max! Please take this seriously. You promised me!" Lily's cheek inflated as she complained to him. "Focus, okay."

"Yes, teacher!"

In the end, under Lily's grueling teaching, which could even be called cute and pretty relaxing, Max learned how to sing. He realized his mistake of putting too much force when trying to sing.

After an hour or so, he tried again and got an OK from Zaza-P, although it wasn't perfect yet.

"Well, it isn't something that can't be fixed with my touch. But you have to get better in case she's having a live performance, got it? I know she will have it sooner or later."

"I know. I plan to continue my training even after this." Max responded.
