Chapter 30 Corrosive Climbers

August listened closely as Sir Dumblore outlined the details of his unique C-ranked quest.

The location was an ancient, floating city known as Tavirah, a place shrouded in mystery and danger.

Situated over two hundred feet above the ground, Tavirah was abandoned and desolate, overrun by ghostly creatures that had made it inhospitable to any who dared venture there.

Fortunately, no one could venture there because the great wizards of the kingdom had sealed it off years ago to prevent any of the darkness in there from spreading further.

The old forger's instructions were clear: retrieve three rare minerals hidden within Tavirah, essential for the unique weapon he was forging. August knew this would be no simple task, but the allure of a custom weapon and the rare rewards drove him forward.

Soon, he found himself boarding a cart that would take him to the eastern outskirts of Tagharuim Kingdom.

The journey was quiet, with only the sounds of the wooden wheels creaking over rough terrain and the distant hum of wildlife. As they approached, August spotted the floating city of Tavirah in the distance—

It was a massive mythical structure shrouded in a ghostly mist, hovering over the ground like a mysterious sentinel.

August's eyes narrowed as he gazed up at the floating city in excitement. "This is going to be one hell of a climb," he thought out loud while getting off the cart.

As the cart rolled away to transport the rest of the passengers elsewhere, August gripped his gear tightly as he approached the vines and roots extending from Tavirah down to the ground.

He took a deep breath and began his ascent.

He grasped the thick vines and pulled himself up, one hand after another. The vines were tough and sturdy. Their gnarled texture offered a firm hold as he climbed higher.

Despite the height, August's focus remained sharp with his gaze fixed on the floating city above.

'Don't look down... Don't look down...' he told himself.

Even though this was a game, everything remained extremely realistic. It was as though he was truly climbing. The wind bit at this skin and he felt strange sensations.

As he climbed, a system notification appeared, breaking his concentration momentarily:

[Warning: You are entering a hostile area. Proceed with caution.]

He continued as each pull brought him closer to the abandoned city. But before he could gain much altitude, another notification flashed:

[Hostile Creatures Detected]

August glanced around, immediately alert. From the corner of his eye, he saw movement—a cluster of strange, six-limbed creatures clinging to the vines and roots.

Their bodies were silky smooth and covered in dark, scaly armor with each limb ending in clawed appendages perfect for climbing.

Their eyes glowed a sickly green, and a faint, acidic hiss emanated from their bodies.

[HP: 6500/6500]

The creatures emitted an unsettling, acidic aura, and their limbs dripped with a corrosive slime that hissed on contact with the vines.

One of the Climbers lunged at August with claws extended, aiming to knock him from his precarious perch.

August gritted his teeth while gripping the vine with one hand and using his other to draw his dagger. He swung at the creature, managing to land a solid hit on its side.

[ -500 HP ]

The creature screeched, retreating momentarily, but three more Climbers were already closing in. Their limbs clawed at him from all angles.

[ -100 HP: Contact with Corrosive Substance]

One creature latched onto his leg, and the corrosive touch ate through his armor, searing his skin and reducing his HP. August quickly kicked it off, struggling to maintain his grip on the vine.

In the next moment, he activated Shadow Dance.

[ Shadow Dance Activated ]

Surprisingly, it still worked even though he was in mid-air.

Multiple shadowy afterimages of him appeared all over. August began leaping from vines to vines to further confuse the creatures.

The creatures hesitated. Their beady eyes darted around as they searched for their target.

Taking advantage of his temporary stealth, August climbed higher, only to find two more Climbers waiting for him above. He had no choice but to fight.

He struck at the nearest one with Hidden Strike, aiming for a critical hit.

[Critical Hit! -1800 HP]

The creature reeled back, screeching in pain, but quickly retaliated with a swipe of its corrosive claws, catching him across the arm.

August winced as the acid burned through his armor. Gritting his teeth, he activated Lightning Bolt, sending a crackling arc of electricity directly at the creature.

The bolt struck, causing it to convulse and release its hold on the vine before plummeting downwards.

Two more creatures lunged at him while flashing their claws.

August quickly activated Dash and with a single pull up, he arrived fifteen feet above them.

He made use of this opportunity to attack them from above while doing his possible best to maintain his grip. But with every dodge and every strike, he could feel his stamina draining.

Another creature managed to latch onto his shoulder, hissing as its acidic body burned through his armor. In a desperate move, August twisted and drove his dagger into its eye, forcing it to release him.

[ -1200 HP ]

The creature hissed in pain as purple blood jetted out of its eye like a fountain.

August raised his left leg and thrust it downwards. It landed square on the face of the creature, sending it spiraling towards the ground.

The last two Climbers clung to the vine below, blocking his path up. August took a deep breath and delivered a powerful Slash to one of the creatures, then quickly followed up with Fireball, sending a blazing sphere of flame directly at the second one.

[Slash Activated. -1600 HP]

[Fireball Activated. MP -200]

[ -2400 HP ]

The Fireball exploded on contact, consuming the creature in flames and sending it tumbling down the vines. Finally, the last creature released its grip, defeated.

Breathing heavily, August clung to the vine as his body ached from the intense battle.

Keeping his grip on the vines while battling the creatures was no easy feat.

Since the game made things realistic, it was normal for him to feel fatigued.

He checked his HP, noticing it had dropped significantly from the corrosive attacks.

[HP: 2900/6000]

Gritting his teeth, he opened his inventory and selected a health potion.

<[Would you like to use Health Potion?]>

[YES/NO]

"Yes."

August proceeded to drink the potion. He felt a warm sensation as his HP gradually began to restore.

[HP: 4900/6000]

He took another HP potion and consumed it.

With his health replenished, he took a moment to gather his bearings. The climb to Tavirah was proving to be far more treacherous than he'd anticipated.

"If just getting there is this hard, I can't imagine what the city itself holds."

But despite the dangers, a thrill surged through him. This was what he had come here for—the challenge, the adventure.

August proceeded to resume his climb to Tavirah, the lost city floating in the mists above.
