Chapter 34: The Monster Is Dead, But...
Shen could not believe that he dealt zero damage to the fish. Especially with the spear in his hand was not just a normal spear. It was a Grade-Rare spear with 20-30 Damage. Furthermore, the fish was just two levels higher than the chicken. The difference between the two should not be that big.
As his mind was spinning, thinking of the possibilities as to why he dealt zero damage. He recalled something about the spear.
"Arghhh! The spear!" He blurted out upon realizing the crux of the issue.
Grade: Rare
Attack: 20-30 Damage
Requirement: Level 3

The requirement to use the spear was level 3 and he was level 1.
Shen finally found out why he dealt no damage. Because he did not meet the requirement to use the spear.
"But why allow me to use the spear if I don't meet the requirement?" He complained.
It might be his fault to forget the requirement. But if he did not meet the requirement, the game should not allow him to use it. However, there was no warning or whatsoever about that.
Shen was about to swap the spear with the sword. He did not realize that the spearhead fish was getting closer by pushing its body with the hind legs. Without Shen realizing it, the spearhead fish leaped toward the air and burst his head.
Head was a critical hit, he died instantly. Shen respawned while grumbling unhappily against the game developer. The game mechanism was totally different from Universe Online.
Up to this stage, he felt that Universe Online was far easier to play with. Walking out of the village, Shen massaged the space between his eyes, "I should have read the guide later."
He skipped the guidebook that came with the game. He thought it would not differ much from the previous one. It seemed he was wrong about it.
Shen returned to the river. He repeated the same steps. Luring out the spearhead fish from the river, and then luring it out further from the river so it could not escape once it was out of breath.
He managed to lure the fish twenty meters away from the river. This was his chance to start the real battle. He was holding the Inferior-Grade [Rusty Sword] in his head. The only available he could use until he reached level 3.
Shen used the same tactic, he dodged the spearhead fish jab and slashed his sword toward the fish's body.

He inflicted 2 damage by a normal slash. He then looked at the spearhead fish's health bar. The red bar looked the same to him. It barely suffered damage, meaning the spearhead fish was too tanky for him.
Shen was not discouraged by the fish's enormous health bar. This was a good start that he could deal some damage to the monster.
The tactic was to let the fish attack him and he would counter the fish. He could not get any closer than two meters because the leap was too fast. If got too close, he would be impaled by the snout-like spearhead.
'Let's try to use the skill now,' He thought to himself as he baited the fish to attack him again.
Swoosh!
The Spearhead Fish lunged toward him, and once again, Shen easily avoided the attack. He then activated his skill, [Void Draw].
Sweng!
The sword flashed toward the side of the fish.

[Your attack triggers [Void Critical]!]

He got lucky to trigger a 4.5% chance [Void Critical]. For the first time, things started to go his way. A smile formed on his lips.
However, the smile did not last long. The smile froze as soon as Shen looked at the spearhead fish's health bar. He dealt 12 Damage in total, but the health bar was reduced only by a thin of hair.
He knew that it would not be easy to kill the monster with a big gap level. At this point, he would have run out of stamina before he could kill the spearhead fish.
By now, he had used two skills, [Void Step] and [Void Draw]. He had expended 20 Stamina Points (SP). Leaving only 80 SP, but he had moved around, now he only had 77 SP.
"This is crazy! How am I supposed to kill the monster!??" Shen almost screamed, but he held back.
"No, I still have a chance. My chance is to let the fish out of breath!" He did not give up, "Yes, that's it. Don't use skill unless it's unnecessary."
Shen fought against the fish for another half an hour. The spearhead fish forced him to use [Void Step] for the second time. His stamina was lowered to 33. He did see hope as he found out that the fish was gasping for air.
Another ten minutes passed. It was a dodging game. At this point, Shen stopped attacking the fish to conserve his stamina. The dodging game continued until the spearhead fish stopped moving.
"Yes! Hooray!" Shen jumped out excitedly as the fish died. He threw himself into the air, jumping here and there. But a few seconds later, he stopped as he realized something.
"Wait a minute! Where's the notification? Where's my exp?" He then dumbfoundedly looked toward the spearhead fish. The fish was not moving, it stayed still as the spearhead was sticking to the ground instead of pointing upward.
"Is it playing dead?" Shen could not help but think so. The fish faked his death then attacked him when he got closer to it. It was possible since this fish was a level 32 monster.
In the end, Shen stayed away from the fish and waited for the notification. He chose to wait patiently instead of approaching the fish.
Another five minutes passed, but Shen still did not receive any notification. The spearhead fish also completely stopped moving. At this moment, he was sure the monster should have died, but why did he not get the exp?
He braced himself and approached the fish. When the distance between them was two meters, the fish did not wake up and attack him. The fish remained on the ground.
He then poked the fish with the sword, and it did not react either. At this point, Shen was a hundred percent sure that the fish was dead. In order to confirm it, Shen stabbed the fish with his sword.
There was no floating damage above the fish. That meant the fish was dead. There was no health bar either.
"But why?" Shen could not comprehend the situation. The happiness and the excitement from killing the fish popped out as the frustration came back to him.
