Chapter 370: Gallade’s Training Direction
“During his tenure as a temporary Gym Trainer, Terrance did not hesitate to increase his workload, ensuring he provided appropriate guidance to challengers of all levels. He was diligent and responsible—a true role model among Gym Trainers.”
“…” All of the above was just imagined praise in Terrance’s head.
Shortly after sending Tatsuya away, another challenger arrived. Thanks to his earlier battle with Tatsuya, Terrance had figured out how he wanted to test the challengers.
The focus would still remain on assessing their “fundamentals.”
For the challenger’s first Gym Battle, Terrance would use Gallade to battle. With a combination of Teleport and Slash, Gallade would defeat the opponent and wait for their second challenge.
If the challenger met Terrance’s standards in the first battle and managed to find a way they believed could counter Teleport, Terrance would intentionally leave an opening, letting Gallade lose the match. He would then go easy on them and award the Badge.
However, if the challenger fell short of Terrance’s “fundamentals” standard in the first battle, even if they reserved a second battle, they would still be mercilessly defeated unless they showed significant improvement.
While Gallade battled, Terrance could roughly gauge the challenger’s fundamentals. To avoid ending the battle too quickly, he planned to turn the match into a guiding battle targeting the opponent’s existing flaws in fundamentals.
This approach would turn Terrance’s initial “lie” into truth, turning him into a ‘Gym Trainer who was dedicated to the growth of challengers’.
“Although this method would take more effort for every battle, I do have an advantage over some Gym Trainers: my knowledge is not inferior to that of an Intermediate Breeder, and I have a deep understanding of most Pokémon. Thinking about it this way, conducting guiding battles isn’t that hard for me.”“And besides, it’s only for two months. Doing this will also improve my assessment’s rating.”
…
Over the past few days, the most aggrieved had been Gallade. As the number one general to be sent out, it was unable to fully exert its strength. Every time, it has to engage in a prolonged battle with opponents that it could have easily defeated. It really has a lot of grievances to express.

Although its performance in each battle was quite ordinary, and it even appeared to “barely” defeat opponents in some battles, in the eyes of challengers, it was still an incredibly powerful Pokémon that was nearly unbeatable.
To them, Gallade was like a towering mountain pressing down on them, making it difficult for them to breathe. The combination of Teleport and Slash was nearly impossible to defend against, and with the average challenger’s skill level being so low, these two simple moves, which should have been easy to counter, ended up stumping the challengers.
Terrance was also thinking of ways to ensure Gallade didn’t waste these battle opportunities. Although the opponents weren’t strong enough to make Gallade use its full-strength, it didn’t mean these battles couldn’t be used for Gallade’s training.
Due to comprehensive training specifically targeting the Teleport and Slash move, Gallade had perfectly combined these two moves, and Terrance had observed this firsthand. When directly using Slash, and using Slash simultaneously with Teleport, although the latter’s speed is not faster than the former, the illusion of time perception created by Teleport makes Slash seem to reach an extreme level of speed!
Gallade could charge the power of its Slash while using Teleport, so the moment it teleported into position, the Slash would follow close behind.
This was the main reason opponents couldn’t defend against it, and also why it is difficult to visually keep up with the speed of Slash.
Gallade has two blades that can be used for attacks; after attacking with both elbows, Gallade can still withstand the pressure of energy accumulation and then quickly execute another Slash, totaling four consecutive Slashes, which can help compensate for Gallade’s relatively lower attack power.
Terrance had been training Gallade and Mismagius to refine their energy control. When it comes to controlling energy, Gallade was still quite rough; it cannot finely control the power of Slash, resulting in significant fluctuations in power. This is evident in battles against challengers, where Gallade often misinterprets Terrance’s commands due to poor control over its strength.
“Until it learns a new move, Slash is everything to Gallade. Although it has trained the move till it is very fast, flexible, and powerful, it’s all superficial.”
“The real challenge lies in controlling the energy within Slash. Gallade still has a long way to go in this regard, which Mismagius can teach it.”
Among Terrance’s Pokémon, Mismagius had the most refined and natural talent for precise energy control. It could manipulate its moves to exactly the desired strength, and every one of Terrance’s Pokémon had sought its advice at some point.
To ensure Gallade didn’t waste these battle opportunities, Terrance and Mismagius coached it on techniques to restrain the energy in its Slash, allowing for a gentler concentration of energy when using the move.
On the first day of learning, Gallade was able to trade reduced power for the ability to perform three consecutive Slash attacks.
With its dual arm blades, this amounted to six successive combos. While the power of each hit decreased, the increased number of attacks helped Gallade better break down opponents’ morale. It also served as a valuable exercise for Gallade itself—power could always be improved over time, but mastering energy control required persistent practice.
At the same time, Terrance also noticed a lack of coordination in Gallade’s double-handed strikes. Although it was difficult to spot without careful observation, Terrance still reminded Gallade that when attacking with both hands at the same time, there were significant openings in Gallade’s defense. Its entire body fell into an uncoordinated state. If it wanted to maintain this combined attack technique, Gallade’s left and right arms needed to be highly synchronized and exhibit the same level of coordination.
As a Breeder with the honor of being a Top Coordinator, Terrance could not ignore this feeling of imbalance. While this minor flaw might not have a significant impact now, as Gallade grew and faced increasingly skilled opponents, it would eventually become a weakness.
For the time being, neither Terrance nor Gallade had a solution to this issue. But there was no rush—Terrance had already reminded Gallade. It would primarily use single-arm strikes in regular battles, reserving its other blade only for defensive purposes when absolutely necessary.
Aside from Gallade, Terrance’s other Pokémon also had their respective training tasks, though not as many as Gallade and Castform.
After all, the two of them were going to be the main team in defending the Gym during this period.
“Mr. Terrance, the previous challenger Tatsuya, as well as Simon, who made a reservation, have both arrived.”
“Hmm, it’s been a week since the first challenge. Now, it seems some challengers are ready for their second attempts,” Terrance thought to himself.
Time to start acting again.
During this time, Gallade’s overwhelming performances had left an indelible impression on many Trainers. If challengers didn’t figure out a way to deal with Gallade, they probably wouldn’t dare to return for another attempt so soon.
