Chapter 20 - Will The Puppy Turn?
Chapter 20 - Will The Puppy Turn?
While Qin Hua was messing around with the System Interface, Su Yan and Lu Chen were still digesting the horrendous events of the day.
"It's dark outside now. We don't know what monsters are lurking around in the complex in this darkness." Lu Chen nervously mumbled.
Ever since he had seen those rats downstairs, he didn't want to step out at all. He just wanted to stay put here until the government or military rescue teams arrived.
"Hmm… I agree."Su Yan lightly nodded. Even he had begun to rethink the whole plan to escape the apartment complex now that visiting Sister Min was a complete bust.
They knew that they definitely needed to get out of here.
Their apartment complex, though high-end, still had several units within it and they did not exactly know how many more people were affected and had turned into zombies.
There was already that one other monster that had been banging on the stairwell door back on their floor.
However, at the same time, the open road could be much worse with mutated animals and zombies both crawling together. At least in here, they didn't have to worry about mutated animals.
Or maybe they did…
There were simply too many variables and everyone was tired.
"At least in this nighttime, it is definitely more dangerous to venture out. Besides, we have also killed the monster in the bedroom. " Su Yan pensively added.
He was afraid to call that monster by its former name, acknowledge that monstrosity as the kind and gentle sister Min…

Why are both human beings and beasts turning this way? He didn't understand.
"Let's stay here for tonight and use the food in the refrigerator."
"We need to make sure that we eat enough and have sufficient energy to carry out our escape tomorrow." Su Yan continued with the planning.
Alex did not want to freeload with the brothers and offered her help. "Why don't we take turns to stay awake and have a sort of lookout or watch duty during the night?"
"That way at least the rest of us will get a chance to catch some sleep and rest well."
"I can take the first shift for a couple of hours. You guys can sleep first and I will immediately alert everyone if something weird happens."
Hearing her suggestion, both Su Yan and Lu Chen positively nodded their heads.
They were impressed with Alex's initiative for being helpful in the group and surprisingly Lu Chen had stopped bickering with the woman as well.
"I will take the shift after Alex." Lu Chen volunteered. He was followed by Su Yan and then finally Xu Meilin was assigned the last shift.
Fortunately for them, Sister Min had recently cooked a lot of food and stored it in the fridge.
The four of them had a quite sumptuous dinner, consisting of grilled meat, vegetables, and fried rice.
Sister Min also had some organic meat paste for dogs that Su Yan carefully fed to Little White.
[Damn! Stingy jerks! Give me some.]
[Why can't I eat the spicy barbecue pork that these guys are gulping down?]
[Damn it. I want to eat the tasty things too!] Qin Hua silently whined.
Thinking that the puppy was asking for some more food, Su Yan shoved another spoonful of that meat paste onto her plate.
[…] Qin Hua cried and silently ate.
It was already late in the night, so the four of them finished eating and rested in the living room, with the bedroom door tightly shut to prevent any and all views of that ghastly horrendous dead body splattered all across the floor and the walls.
The living room had a huge sectional couch, so each one of them took one section and comfortably settled down.
Alex, on the other hand, sat down on a chair in high alert, with her back against a wall and her eyes focused on both the living room window and the main door.
Thankfully, the late sister Min was only able to afford a studio apartment and hence it was easier to secure the small place.
Soon the night ticked by slowly and silently, but except for Xu Meilin, no one else was asleep yet. Along with Alex, both Su Yan and Lu Chen were wide awake.
Even though the fight with the monster had thoroughly drained out their energy, they were still wide awake, adrenaline coursing through their body.
"Bro, is your ability like a transmutation ability or a beast-like ability?" Lu Chen turned around and quietly whispered.
He was very happy that his best friend also had an ability like him and hoped that together they could rock this bizarre world.
"Hmm… I don't really know what my ability is…" Su Yan answered.
He raised his hand and looked at it with a blank expression on his face. "One moment I was staring at the monster and the next moment my skin had turned into something else."
"My arm was covered by hard scales like that of a fish or snake, albeit very tough and strong. I tried to extend it to other regions of the body to protect myself but I couldn't…"
Su Yan absentmindedly continued talking as if he was mumbling to himself rather than having a conversation with Lu Chen.
After several minutes of silence, Lu Chen again turned around and asked. This time with a very worried expression.
"Do you think that something like this will also happen to our little white?" He looked at the puppy which was peacefully lying on the floor next to Su Yan.
"I mean… After seeing these monsters and mutated rats… I am just a bit skeptical. Do you think that our Little White will get affected too?"
"She did bite into that monster as if she was defending us. Do you think that she can get infected or something from that?"
"I mean… like zombies?" Lu Chen nervously asked. He didn't really want to think about this possibility, but it's not like they had a choice.
Qin Hua's ears perked up and she intently listened to the conversation. She was also not asleep yet.
