Chapter 537: Disappearing Portals
"They just never end!" Elena grunted as she retracted her black knives from the body of the fallen Demon before her. It was not from Datar, and was one of the mortal minions of the Paragon of Undeath.
While the celestial level forces of the Paragon of Undeath was limited, his mortal forces was many times the number of the celestial forces! He could sustain a long incursion if he wanted to, and that was what he was doing!
Elena looked around at the mass of bodies that were riddled with smoky black daggers. She had mowed through this force of Demons and otherworldly beings that had invaded this town. Up above, the sounds of wings beating drew Elena's attention and she saw two massive Dragons fighting. One was wreathed in shadows, while the other was covered in red, black and gold scales.
Mica fought without losing ground against the enemy, making sure that each blow the enemy dealt was paid back at least twofold!
Elena did not look worried as she knew that Mica firmly held the upper hand. And true to her belief, the body of the enemy dragon soon fell to the side of a mountain, the life rapidly draining from it.
Whoosh!
Mica's wings stirred up powerful wind currents as he swooped down and landed a short distance away from Elena. He opened his mouth to speak, but stopped when a sudden change occurred in the sky.
With shock, both of them looked up and watched as all the portals in the sky rapidly closed up, blinking out of existence. The redness of the sky also began to slowly fade away, although not as quickly as the portals disappeared.
"The portals... they're gone..." One of the many human soldiers that had been fighting to defend the town a short distance away sighed tiredly. They had been fighting for hours and had already lost many to the endless waves of enemies.
However, the soldiers did not let down their guard even though the portals had vanished. Until they received clear confirmation that they were in the clear, then it was best to remain alert and ready to fight at a moment's notice.

"What do you think? Is it over?" Elena asked Mica as she hopped onto his back.
"I'm not so sure. It seems too good to be true for something so serious to be over so quickly. From what we know, this is supposed to be a much longer and more trying ordeal." Mica shook his head and walked to the town with steady steps. With his towering point of view, he could see many injured soldiers that had been forced to fall back. They were being attended to or resting.
Unfortunately, a few had succumbed to their wounds.
"War is an endless meat grinder. I don't like it, but it seems like it cannot be stopped." Elena frowned as she witnessed all the sights. She had been in the Demon War and her mentality had matured a lot back then. But she still did not like to see things like this.
Senseless fighting and loss of life was something that she greatly frowned upon, but if anyone got in her way, then she would not mind putting them down.
"If things are this bad down here, then I wonder how tough things must be up there." Elena wondered out loud, her gaze rising to the sky above that had cleared up even more.
"Instead of worrying about your husband-to-be, worry more about yourself, Elena. We both know that he is probably fine." Mica sighed exasperatedly and shook his head, as if they had gone over this topic dozens of times.
"What? I'm allowed to worry." Elena rolled her eyes without any signs of shame.
"Whatever you say." Mica shook his head and continued walking, occasionally using his powers to heal badly wounded soldiers.

"The sky has cleared up and the portals are closed. This is a good sign." Raegan said to his brother as the two of them met within a closed chamber. Special magic runes were drawn out on the walls, door, windows, ceiling and floor to ensure privacy. Darren had worked tirelessly on them to ensure that they were the best they could be without any loopholes.
"Or perhaps the calm before the storm. We must wait for word from Father before we let down our guards. We should prepare for much worse." Darren said, his voice taking on a graver tone.
Raegan sighed, "Prepare for more? This world has already suffered so much. Even us, with the highest number of powerhouses and experts, have suffered a lot. I can only imagine what others have to go through. The world will go through an upheaval after this is all over."
"If we survive it." Darren added and Raegan looked at him, his annoyance clear.
"Must you always be so pessimistic?" The older of the two asked.
"One of us has to be the pessimistic one." Darren shrugged casually and turned away from Raegan.

"Your Majesty." Patrick knelt before Emperor Leonidas. The Emperor had a stern expression as he examined the map that was spread out on the floor of the expansive throne room. It depicted a magical, realistic representation of the current state of the Gublin Empire.
"You may speak, Patrick." Leonidas briefly turned away from the map to look at Patrick.
"The portals have vanished, Your Majesty. And the malevolent aura of destruction has begun to fade away. I believe something might have happened in the Celestial Realm that has lightened the burden on our heads." Patrick gave his report.
"Indeed, I have noticed all of this. But this is not over. My gut tells me that there is trouble on the horizon. Do not let your guard down. Send relief to the towns and cities that need it. Let our men rest and prepare for anything that can happen.
You may go now." Leonidas said and turned back to the map as Patrick took his leave.
