The Blue Eyes

Chapter 11 - RACHEL KUSTKA

Kevin's black sedan was neatly parked on the side of the road not far from Blue's school. He deliberately went to the blue-eyed girl's school this afternoon. He would not confront the girl directly and would only observe Blue from a distance, making sure that the black-haired girl was fine.

As per Kris's advice, he would try to patiently wait until the young girl agreed to meet him and talk to him.

Ah, talking about Kris reminded him of something unpleasant. The scientist unwillingly recalled their annoying conversation last night. He regretted his decision in calling Kris last night when he could have called someone else like Andre or anyone but Kris for advice regarding Blue's seemingly strange change of attitude.

Why did Kris have to be the person he contacted last night? It was true that he did not have so many close friends, but surely Kris wasn't his only friend.

Kevin's genius brain reconstructed how their conversation was going on last night.

["Yes, I've found that person, and that person is you."]

Kris's words seemed to freeze his mind until he was silent for a few minutes and didn't respond to Kris, who still hadn't hung up on his phone. After hearing Kris's strange sentence, the scientist tried to dig up his memory; Have I met Kris before? Have I ever known him? Why is he looking for me? Did I owe him something in the past and he comes to me now to make me pay?

But those questions that were bothering him for a few seconds were immediately answered when he heard the sound of a crisp chuckle from the other end of the phone. That was Kris's chuckle, and in between his chuckles, he said, "I was just kidding. Why are you taking it so seriously?"

After hearing that maddening response, Kevin immediately ended their phone call without saying goodbye.

Kevin really felt like he was being played last night. Hey, don't blame Kevin for taking Kris's words seriously. Just blame Kris for saying that sentence in a tone that sounded earnest and solemn. Kevin was not wrong if he thought Kris wasn't joking.

Remembering that irritating moment only made the black-haired man felt pissed off to death again. He could only sigh and tried to get rid of the annoying memory.

Before long, his sharp eyes caught Blue walking out of the school gate with a girl he didn't know. The two of them stopped in front of the gate for a while and were seen chatting seriously.

"Oh, that introvert kid has a friend, huh? But, what are they talking about? Why are they so serious? Is Kris right about Blue having a love affair?" Kevin had a monologue in his car. His eyes could not be diverted from the figure of Blue, who was still talking seriously with the girl beside her.

From the interaction between the two girls, it was clear that they were not very close. Maybe they were just acquaintances, not really friends.

Not long after, Blue suddenly turned her head at him, and those blue irises immediately met his brownish irises. Kevin could only gulp nervously. He did not expect that Blue could catch him this fast. The handsome man was getting panic even more when he found Blue's footsteps moving toward his car. Ah, he should have parked the car farther away.

But now it was meaningless to regret everything. Right at this moment, Blue's knuckles were knocking on the side window next to the passenger seat, a non-verbal gesture that ordered Kevin to unlock the car door. And even if Kevin was unwilling, he was forced to comply with the order.

Without further ado, Blue got into the car and sat in the passenger seat next to Kevin. "You intend to follow me, Brother Kevin?" She asked as her body was perfectly seated on the car seat.

Kevin cleared his throat awkwardly. Yes, he did intend to follow Blue today. The sole reason for his action was his anxious feeling. He had known Blue for almost seventeen years, but it was the first time the girl acted strangely.

He was even willing to neglect his work in the laboratory to follow Blue today. He didn't intend to be a stalker, but he just wanted to make sure that nothing bad happened to the young girl.

"I accidentally came this way and stopped for a moment to answer the phone. I didn't know that it was already the time for you to go home," Kevin excused shamelessly.

Blue just shrugged her shoulders, deciding not to prolong the trailing matter. She seemed to know so well that a person full of pride like Kevin would not easily admit the embarrassing thing he was doing.

The long-haired girl then just slowly fastened the seat belt, getting ready if at any time Kevin would start the car engine again. She patiently waited for a few minutes, but the car was still not producing any sounds and still not moving an inch. The young girl had no other choice than to turn her head to Kevin, stared at the older man in confusion.

"Are you in love, Blue?" Kevin's question got Blue felt even more confused.

"In love?" The girl asked back while blinking her pretty eyes innocently.

Kevin nodded in confirmation of Blue's question. "I saw you were talking seriously with your friend earlier. Are you guys fighting over the same guy? Is that what made you shut yourself up and refuse to see me?" He then asked carefully.

Blue still blinking in confusion for a moment, but a few seconds later she laughed wryly. "I will not step over you, Brother. I will just fall in love after you fall in love," said the girl in between her weak laughter.

Kevin unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief. He looked like a strict father, who kept prying on his daughter's private life, but he didn't intend to give off that vibe. He was with Blue for almost seventeen years, and the fatherly instinct within him seemed to develop without him noticing it.

"Brother Kevin." Blue's voice once again broke the silence, making the young man turned his head to the girl again. After receiving full attention from the other person, she continued, "Do you believe me?"

Kevin was stunned at Blue's question, especially when he saw a grim look emanating from the girl's blue eyes. "What happened to you, Blue?" Instead of answering, he was asked back.

Blue could not answer right away. Instead, she drooped her head and played with her long fingers on her lap.

She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, and then replied without looking up, "Rachel Kustka, she is my classmate. She has been absent from school for a few days, and earlier one of my classmates told me that Rachel suddenly disappeared for no reason."

Kevin finally could understand why Blue was acting differently than usual. It turned out that the girl was worried about one of her schoolmates. Blue was known as a cold girl. She would not talk if other people didn't talk to her first, and would not approach other people if they didn't approach her first.

She also looked indifferent to her surroundings, but that was not true. Blue was actually a very sensitive and caring girl. Kevin remembered one moment when Blue was still a little kid.

At that time, she secretly cared for a sick stray cat in their orphanage. The rules of the orphanage didn't allow them to bring animals inside, but Blue was desperate to do that because she didn't have the heart to leave the little animal. Kevin knew very well that Blue had a warm heart.

"Shall we go over to her house to confirm her condition?" Kevin then asked softly.

Blue finally raised her head and looked at the man again. She shook her head lightly before answering, "My homeroom teacher had gone to her house, but the house was empty. She and her family suddenly disappeared."

The young man was lost in thought for a moment, but then he asked the girl again, "How is the economic condition of her family? Is her family well-off?"

Again, Blue shook her head and answered, "They're just an ordinary family. I don't think their economic conditions are very good."

This time Kevin nodded in understanding. "Maybe that's the problem," he said again. "I don't want to jump to a conclusion, but it could be that Rachel's family is in debt and unable to pay it. If that's the case, then they have no other choice but to run away."

The handsome man was a scientist who used to make a hypothesis, but his hypothesis this time sounded very dramatic in Blue's ears.

For a moment no one made a sound in the car. The two people in the car seemed busy with their thoughts until finally, the sound of Blue's long sigh broke the silence, and she then asked in a low voice, "What if I caused Rachel and her family to disappear?"
