Chapter 28 Boss (8)
Jake managed to protect his face, but as for the rest of his body… he nearly got burned down to a crisp. All of his equipment lost some durability, so things were getting worse by the minute.
Congratulations! The skill Fire Resistance has leveled up.
For a change, Jake decided to increase his mentality, and in the next attack, he already noticed a difference. Instead of eighty percent of his health, he lost seventy-six. Jake also noticed why his Fire Resistance didn't level up until now. That skill only worked with direct attacks… to endure non-direct attacks, he probably will need something like Heat Resistance. It was really annoying and fun how complex that game was.

While seeing Jake's body emitting a lot of steam, Louise decided that it would be better to use her ordinary Ice Arrows. She could be two times faster if she does that, after all. She began to fire two Ice Arrows per second, and while the creature was no longer flinching, the parts that were hit were bothering the monster quite a lot.

The creature was suffering damage. Even though they didn't have the numbers, Jake knew that they could pull it off. However, he also knew that he would run out of potions before they could finish off the monster. It was dangerous, but Jake decided to take some risks.
When Jake's mana was already full, he put another potion in his mouth, but he didn't drink it yet. Instead of that, he charged toward the boss, and when the creature opened its mouth to fire flames, he used Mana Blade several times in a quick succession to decrease the power of its attack. With Louise's help, the power of the flames decreased, and several Mana Blades hit the monster's face. Jake used that chance to dash with all his might and then drank the potion. He used Bash and hit the monster's eyes with his katana and scabbard with all his might.
With his eyes barely opened, Jake managed to see the core of the monster, it was pretty far away, but he didn't care. He used Mana Blade several times in a row while aiming to the core. While he created a hole in the face of the creature, it didn't reach his target. Jake clicked his tongue in annoyance and retreated since he could barely withstand the heat.
"Are you all right?" Louise asked.
"Just focus on hitting the monster's eyes. That should help us a little bit," Jake replied.
Jake thought that using wind perhaps would be a better idea. Still, the vibrating air probably would block that element even more. As for earth magic, it would melt and become even less useful against it. While Jake didn't have many ideas about magic, Louise had one. When the slime used its fire waves again, she decreased the power one of attack and enhanced one Ice Arrow, but instead of firing it, she held it. That made her feel some headache, but soon the next attack came, and she enhanced her arrow once again.
An Ice Arrow four times larger than usual was fired toward the monster's face, and this time, the attack didn't lose any power due to the presence of the monster or the effects of the dungeon. The arrow pierced the monster's body pretty deeply, and while it didn't hit the core, it froze a good part of the monster's face. Jake opened his eyes widely in surprise and then charged for attack when he noticed the temperature had decreased. With all these might, they used Bash and cracked the frozen part of the monster's body.

Jake opened his eyes widely when he saw that the attack caused more than one thousand points of damage. A part of the boss was destroyed and the creature shrunk in size to repair it, but then Jake realized that the heat emitted by the creature also decreased. Fighting will be easier from that point onward…
Jake lowered his stance and charged toward the flames spat by the monster, and then he hit the creature's face yet again with a quick sequence of Bash. Once that was done, he used Mana Blade over and over again.
Once he retreated, Lana healed Jake while he was running to the sides, but then thanks to that, the monster changed its attention toward Louise. The aggro changed because of that powerful attack… while that was unavoidable, it still annoyed Jake.
Louise and Lana used some spells to attack the monster, but since the creature wasn't using any magic, their attacks barely could do much. It was quite crazy that such a monster had realized that using magic against Louise was a bad idea. However, showing his back toward Jake had been pretty stupid.
Jake dashed toward the monster while holding his katana with both hands and then slashed the monster's back. The attack only caused thirty points of damage, but soon after, Jake used Mana Blade, and the creature flinched in pain. Somehow, Jake had dealt a critical damage, but he couldn't understand why, but that was what happened.
Before the monster could turn around to face him, Jake repeated the same strategy. He slashed while using Bash, and then when the blade made contact with the skin, he used Mana Blade. The beam of energy pierced the monster's body more than it should be and caused critical damage yet again.
"I see now…" Jake smirked.
Two quick attacks in the same area could cause critical damage… probably because the first weakened or softened the area. That was a piece of information Jake would make sure to never forget.
