Chapter 44 Leveling Up
Jake entered the arena. The moment he did, the wooden token in his hands hovered for a moment and then disappeared.
[You have entered Arena 4. You will now face-off against one random opponent] a notification appeared.
Jake smiled as he looked forward expectantly. The arena that he was in was quite spacious with white tiles all around. It felt quite luxurious, in fact, and very pretty.
And opposite to him was just empty space. There was nobody there. Above this empty space was a giant hovering hologram that was flickering, with a single screen and multiple faces moving at a giant speed.
The system was trying to match Jake with a suitable opponent, but being at level eleven, he didn't exactly have any suitable opponents.
Ding!
[Opponent Chosen.]
The hologram turned around and suddenly a thin slit appeared in the bottom of this three-dimensional box. It started increasing in size, and then, like an actual box, it opened from the bottom and dropped a giant man from inside it.
This man, an NPC without doubt, looked around as if he was confused. His expression showed that he was only confused, and in his right arm, an ax the size of Jake himself gleamed in the sun.
"The first match that I start, I am faced with a giant? You have to be kidding me. Guess the game does not want me to win the gold." Jake shook his head as he pointed the sword towards the giant, who was now looking straight at Jake.
Its expression showed only rage and no intellect.
Raising its ax, it roared at Jake but did not rush toward him as one would expect. Instead, it stood still, just waiting for something.

And that something was the giant holographic box that was still in the air, which turned to the left. The number three on it glared brightly at Jake.
It was a countdown. It turned with each second, and the moment that it hit zero, it suddenly disappeared into pixels, and the giant roared once more.
It started charging toward Jake.
Any player could see the level of his or her opponent as long as the opponent was below one's level or within fifty levels of one's level. That meant that Jake could see the level of everyone until the level sixty-one.
And the giant in front of him was at level thirty, someone that he could not possibly win against. His winning would simply defy all common sense.
He swiftly moved aside to dodge the attack that was coming toward him. And then, moving to the back of the giant, his sword slashed to try and hit the nape of his opponent.
Being large in size not only meant great strength, but also a larger target. With ease, Jake's sword found the back of the giant's neck, and the giant roared with pain.
Smiling, Jake flew back a few steps before the giant could hit him with the ax. Just a single hit and he would probably lose most of his HP.
[Critical Hit. -300 HP]
The change in the health bar of the giant, which was, although visible, was barely visible. It moved fractions of an inch. Even a critical hit did just this much damage, it looked like the defense of the giant was just too tough for his attack to pierce through.
"I have to start using proper attacks." Jake understood as he quickly jumped up to dodge another sweeping attack from the giant.
He then ran up to attack the same place again. This time though, his sword shone with a brilliance that wanted to blind someone.
"Despairing Strike!" he shouted the moment that his sword reached its apex of brilliance, and the sword came hurling down at the nape of the giant's neck.
The moment that the sword hit the giant, it grunted as it stumbled a few steps forward. Then, it turned around, roaring with pain.
[Critical Hit! -1300 HP]
"I just need to wear down its defense in that one place and one last attack should do it. Maybe I should use the sword of despair now and drag it for another three minutes so that I can have the attack ready for the next fight?" Jake was thinking of what he could do as he dodged the charge of the giant.
It was a simple attack and dodging it was as easy as it could get. The giant might be high-leveled with a lot of stats, but it had the one problem that all normal classes had: It didn't have any skills.
Jake finally agreed on one plan as he jumped up again, and this time landed straight on the ax itself, which was as tall as he was. He almost fell off, barely able to balance himself, and before the giant took out the ax from the ground, Jake slashed at the fingers, causing the giant to wince.
The ax fell to the ground, falling from the giant's grip. Jake jumped off and went around the giant. But the giant had different priorities. It bent down to pick up the ax that it dropped with a slow motion.
"What a dumb move." Jake thought to himself as he jumped in the air, and his sword shone once more.
"Slash of Hunger!" Jake shouted as his sword slashed at the nape of the giant once more. And this time, the skin of the giant cracked, and what appeared to be purple blood flew out.
"So realistic, it's kind of disgusting." Jake shook his head as he retreated once more.
[Critical Hit! -11000 HP]
This time, the attack took out a chunk of the giant's health.
"Damn, that was unexpected. How is this skill so overpowered? This legendary class is like a cheat code." Jake was shaken by how much damage that did.
The combination of his items and his skills was going to be so deadly that his level wouldn't matter anymore.
