Chapter 46 Luck Doesn't Always Last
[You have leveled up!]
[You have leveled up!]
Seeing that he got two levels from this one fight, Jake knew that even among Rare Classes, this one was a strong one.
He looked at the holographic box that appeared in the air once again. It rotated, with faces alternating by the second, and finally landed on one face.
The doors down bottom opened, and someone fell through these doors.
It was a woman this time, and she was clad in armor to the fullest. The only reason that Jake could tell that it was a woman was that her helmet was not fully in place.
She had a giant shield, one of the paladins, and she trusted it into the ground right in front of her.
She then glared at Jake, as if waiting for him to make his move.
"Guess my luck has finally run out. Why am I facing a Holy Paladin in the sixth battle? This is an opponent that wasn't supposed to come out even in the thirtieth battle! And I can't even see her level! She is above level seventy-two!" Jake cursed as he held his sword.
He was going to give a fight and going to try to win, but he had little confidence in his victory.
Maybe if his opponent was in level thirty, or even level forty, he could try. But he didn't even know what level his opponent was.

"You are weak. I do not know why I have been selected to face you. But since you are the one with the disadvantage, I shall allow you to attack me first." the paladin said with a coarse voice that only showed that this woman wasn't all show.
He had one shot. One shot to do the most damage that he could. Gripping his sword, he looked at his stats. Forty Free Attribute Points that he could assign.
But with seven thousand gold coins on the line, this was a risk that he was willing to take.
He quickly added everything to strength, increasing it to a staggering fifty-one, along with the twenty increase with the sword of misery.
His strength stat was just as good as any level fifty even. But whether it could dent the HP bar of a paladin was yet to be seen.
Jake took a deep breath and clicked on the button that was hovering in front of him.
The box started turning, and the battle was underway.
He gripped his sword and activated his skill. His sword shone as he started charging at her.
The paladin took up her shield and raised it to her chest, her right hand clutching a giant sword that had no business being wielded by any human.
With the current trajectory, all of Jake's attacks would be absorbed by this giant shield, and his preparation would be for naught.
He couldn't let that happen. Suddenly, a knife flew from Jake's side, straight towards the paladin's face.
This was an attack that she wasn't expecting. A sneak attack with one of the items that Jake stocked on. The paladin swiftly raised her shield further up to defend against this attack, as she had no other option but to do so.
With the slight clearance that was created, Jake skid on the ground, going below the paladin, missing the shield by a fraction of an inch.
He was behind her, and the sword was ready.
"Slash of Hunger!"
The sword hit the one place that Jake thought the attack would have any impact. The back of the head. The clash between the helmet and the sword was deafening, and the sonorous metals clanged loudly.
[Critial Hit! -4000 HP]
Even after all of this, the paladin's defense was too much to overcome. This was a defensive class for a reason.
But Jake was not done yet.
He raised his hand again.
"Despairing Strike!"
The sword struck the back of the head at the exact same place that he struck before. The paladin didn't have any time to react. It all happened too fast, and paladins sacrificed agility for defense.
[-1006 HP]
Once again, the strike was lackluster, and with this attack, the paladin turned around to face Jake.
Both of his attacks were in close quarters, and he was within striking distance of the paladin, whose sword came crashing down upon him.
"Reflect!" he quickly activated the final skill in his bag of trump cards.
[Critical Hit! -12000 HP]
The HP bar slid from green to yellow, but it was nowhere close to the dangerous red that Jake wanted it to get to.
He tried to retreat, but it was too late. The paladin's sword came crashing down on him.
[-15000 HP]
Some classes gave the players extra HP. Jake's didn't. His HP bar went to zero within seconds, and Jake's screen went blank.
[You have died. You have lost one level, and five Attribute Points which will be deducted from where you last added Free Attribute Points. Do you wish to revive in the same place?]
This was all that Jake could see in this black space. White words with a black background.
"Revive." Jake nodded.
"Reviving."
The electronic voice said, and all color resumed back in his world.
He returned to the colosseum, and the chaotic roar of the audience shook him back to reality. Looking around, he was right in front of arena number four, and there was a token in his hands.
It was the same wooden token that he got when he registered.
But there was something slightly different about it.
It had the number four written on it, and also had a smaller number written below it, a number written in blue: 6. The number of wins he had.
"Damn it. If it weren't for the goddamn paladin that suddenly came, I would definitely have gotten the seven thousand gold. And those odds will never come again." Jake cursed.
After so many days of heaven-defying luck, it finally ran out for once.
